By using exposuremeter.net (the "Service"), you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the Service. The Service is provided by Exposure Meter ("we", "us").

1. What the Service is

Exposure Meter is a self-audit tool. You supply text, and it shows which passages a simple keyword-and-proximity model would flag as political signals. It runs in your browser.

It is a lens, not a verdict. It gives you a heuristic reading of the text you provide. It is not a prediction of what any government, company, or person will do.

2. What it is not

  • Not legal advice. Nothing here is legal advice, and using the Service does not create a lawyer-client relationship.
  • Not a safety guarantee. A low score means few signals were detected by this rule set. It does not mean you are safe.
  • Not a security service. It cannot tell you whether you are under surveillance, whether your accounts or devices are compromised, or what risks apply in your country, immigration status, or job.
  • Incomplete. It does not understand sarcasm, quotation, images, most non-English text, or context. It can flag text that is harmless and miss text that matters. Its name lists can be out of date.

Do not make decisions about your legal, immigration, employment, personal, or physical safety based only on this tool. If you are at risk, consult qualified local professionals or organizations.

3. Who may use it and how

You may use the Service to review your own text, or text you have a right to analyze.

You may not use the Service to:

  • score, rank, profile, or screen other people, or to build lists of people;
  • target, monitor, identify, or retaliate against anyone for their speech or associations;
  • process material at population scale, or connect it to automated or law-enforcement systems;
  • enter private individuals, handles, or contacts into the alias field. That field is for public officeholder, party, role, or institution names only;
  • attempt to break, overload, scrape, or reverse engineer the Service beyond what applicable law allows;
  • break the law or help others do so.

We may block access to anyone who does these things.

4. Your content

The text you analyze stays on your device and we never receive it. It remains yours. We claim no rights in it. Reports you download are yours to keep, share, or delete, and you are responsible for protecting them.

5. The Service and our materials

The scoring method, word lists, and weights are published on the site so you can inspect them. The scanner's client-side code is available under the MIT License; the methodology description and word lists are published under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). The Exposure Meter name and logo are our trademarks. Don't use them in a way that suggests we endorse you.

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of the scanner's client-side code, to deal in the code without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the code, subject to including this notice. The code is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind.

We may change the word lists, weights, and features at any time. Name lists in particular change as officeholders change. We may change or stop the Service.

6. Contributions

Contributions are voluntary and support the development of the Service. They are not tax-deductible. Exposure Meter is not a registered charitable organization. A contribution does not buy shares, ownership, or any promised feature.

Payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe's terms. Contributions are non-refundable except where made in error; if that happens, write to contactexposuremeter@gmail.com within 30 days.

7. Organizations

Custom services and invoice billing for organizations are covered by a separate written agreement or invoice. If there is a conflict, that agreement controls. [Attorney: draft a short services agreement template.]

8. No warranty

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including, but not limited to, implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or completely secure.

9. Limits on our liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Exposure Meter (and its authors, contributors, operators, and legal entities) shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, goodwill, or reputation, or for any legal, physical, or social harm arising out of or related to your use of the Service or decisions you make based on the Service — including decisions to post, retain, modify, or delete content.

Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to or arising out of the Service or these Terms will not exceed the greater of: (a) $100 USD, or (b) the total amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months preceding the claim.

These limitations apply regardless of the legal theory (contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or otherwise) and even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain warranties or incidental/consequential damages, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you. In such jurisdictions, our liability is limited to the minimum extent permitted by applicable law. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under governing law.

9a. User assumption of risk

  1. Heuristic nature of results. You explicitly acknowledge that Exposure Meter evaluates text against transparent, local-first rule sets. Results reflect relative signal density, not a score of personal safety, legal immunity, or probability of arrest or investigation. A low score indicates only that few configured rules matched; it does not mean "you are safe".
  2. User responsibility. You retain full responsibility for evaluating your personal risks, local political conditions, applicable legal statutes, and decisions regarding what speech to publish, maintain, or remove.

10. Ending use

You can stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or end access if you break these terms.

11. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising from these terms or the Service will be heard in the state or federal courts located in North Carolina. There is no mandatory arbitration and no class-action waiver.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If we make a material change, we will update the date above and note it on this page. Continued use after that means you accept the new terms.
